Darrell is a writer and photographer with deep roots in south Louisiana. He grew up on the kind of family stories that get told at kitchen tables and never written down, and What Love Costs is his attempt to write some of them down honestly, including the parts nobody wanted said out loud.

About the book

What Love Costs is a work of fiction drawn from family history. The people, names and places in it have been changed, combined and invented. Some of the world they move through is real: the galleries of the New Orleans housing projects, the department stores of Canal Street, the Black Catholic parishes that families built and kept.

Reading the draft

The book is being written with a small reading circle who read chapters as they're drafted and tell me where the story holds and where it slips. If you'd like to follow along, the letter is the place to start.
